Six point three billion dollars walked out of the world's largest crypto exchange, and seven of eight majors closed green. That's not resilience — that's the market deciding, inside of roughly a day, that this was a Binance balance-sheet problem rather than a crypto problem. The one name that closed red is where the actual risk went.
What Changed
ETH/USD was the only decliner on the board, down 0.78% to $2,235.50, on a session where avalanche ran 2.55% and solana added 1.66%. Think about how strange that is. The biggest theft in the history of the asset class, and the asset that gets punished is the one with the smartest money and the deepest institutional ownership.

Except it isn't strange at all. The attackers were holding more than 500,000 ETH early Friday alongside 18,270 BTC — a bitcoin position larger than Coinbase's reported corporate treasury, per Cointelegraph. That's an overhang with a face. And security researchers have been pointing at EIP-7702, the account-abstraction upgrade: it didn't cause the breach, but it may have helped the attackers route around withdrawal safeguards. TRM Labs and Chainalysis attribute the raid to North Korea, which means the ETH doesn't get sold into the bid so much as laundered through it. RUNE jumped 13% on exactly that logic — THORChain has been the pipe for stolen funds before.
The session itself was a straight V. Nothing gapped meaningfully; the majors opened on their prior closes and then got hit. BTC/USD traded down to $76,500.11, under $77,000 and the lowest level since September per NDTV Profit, while CoinDesk tallied $1.57 billion in leveraged positions liquidated across the complex. Then it came back, and kept coming back, closing at $78,151.08 for a 0.20% gain. Seven of the eight finished in the upper third of their daily ranges. That's not a market absorbing bad news slowly — that's one that got its answer.
The answer was Binance's balance sheet. The exchange said it set aside more than $6.34 billion of company funds to cover the shortfall, that it holds $5 billion in matching tokens it will include in its next proof-of-reserves report, and that it's working with the FBI to recover the roughly $3 billion already frozen. Once the shortfall is funded, the only trade that mattered — exchange insolvency, contagion, the 2022 playbook — stops existing. Anyone who was around for that autumn knows the difference between a hole and a hole someone has already filled.
Ether sits 19.5% below its 90-day high. Bitcoin is 9.6% below its own. That gap was there before Thursday night, and Friday widened it.
Which brings me to the two calls I got wrong. The $82,500 bitcoin target from October 23 expired worthless, and the $84,377.21 reversal level never got within shouting distance. What changed is simple enough: nobody models a record heist into a five-session range call. The October 27 call for a close below $79,000 is in the money and then some.
So here's where it lives or dies. Ether's session low at $2,174.08 is the level that prices the overhang — a close below it within five sessions says the market is still discounting half a million stolen ETH looking for an exit, and that the EIP-7702 conversation has legs beyond the news cycle. On the other side, a BTC/USD close above the session high of $78,804.01 inside three sessions says the systemic scare is fully bled out. What would flip me: confirmation that the frozen $3 billion includes the bulk of the ether, or a clean proof-of-reserves print that gets ether outperforming bitcoin again. Either one and the discount closes fast.
The Line
$2,174.08 on ether — below that, Friday's recovery doesn't survive the week.
