Tesla's capital expenditure line moved bitcoin. That's the session. BTC/USD was working toward $85,000 before the reversal, and by the close it sat at $82,486.48, down 1.91% and within twenty-two dollars of the day's low. The move coincided with Tesla's Q3 capex coming in lighter than expected and Seoul's Kospi selling off — which is to say crypto spent Thursday trading as a leveraged expression of somebody else's AI capex thesis.
The shape of the day was ugly in a specific way. Bitcoin opened flat on its prior close at $84,093.42, tagged $84,377.21, and then bled for the rest of the session without a single meaningful bounce. The low printed $82,465.00. The close was essentially on it. No late bid, no dip-buyers stepping in at the round number, nothing. When a session finishes that close to its low, the people who wanted out weren't finished.
Breadth was total. Eight of eight majors finished red, with ADA/USD worst at -3.02% to $0.2184 and AVAX/USD right behind at -2.96%, its second consecutive red close and now 16.6% lower over thirty sessions. SOL/USD gave up 2.22% to $104.59 — Forexlive tied the weakness to escalating Middle East tensions overshadowing the Alpenglow upgrade, which is roughly what I argued Wednesday when I flagged $105 as the level that wouldn't hold. It didn't.
Here's the part that doesn't match the narrative. The story going around was that traders were seeking shelter in bitcoin while altcoins slid. Bitcoin fell harder than ETH/USD (-1.67%), harder than XRP/USD (-1.74%), and considerably harder than BNB/USD, which lost just 1.03% to $738.59.
Bitcoin was only the fifth-worst performer of eight on a day when every single major closed lower.
That's not a flight to quality. That's a broad de-risking where the most liquid asset gets sold because it's the easiest thing to sell. And on ETH — I called $2,500 earlier this month on the back of the brokerage staking bid and it never got there. Today's high was $2,482.49. The flow I thought was coming hasn't arrived, and until ether can take out that handle it isn't leading anything.
What Didn't Happen
SoFi Bank launched a bank-issued tokenized deposit Thursday. SoFi Earn pays 4.40% APY, carries FDIC coverage, and converts to stablecoins around the clock. A regulated US bank issuing yield-bearing tokenized dollars that plug directly into crypto rails is precisely the TradFi-plumbing story the industry has spent three years promising would re-rate the sector.

Price did nothing with it. Not a tick.
Same with CryptoQuant's Ki Young Ju flagging rising hashrate as public miners backed by major TradFi players come back online — he called it an indirect bullish signal from institutions, and bitcoin closed on its low anyway. Same with Fireblocks publicly disputing the report that Visa is in talks for a $2.5 billion acquisition; a denial of that size would normally move something somewhere, and it moved nothing.
Three genuine infrastructure headlines in a single session and the market couldn't be bothered. Anyone who traded 2022 recognizes this posture: when the marginal dollar is positioned off macro, the chain-native catalysts get filed under "nice, call me later." The correlation that matters right now runs through AI capex expectations, not through custody deals or hashrate charts. Which cuts both ways — if the AI complex steadies, crypto gets handed a bid it didn't earn.
What would flip me: a close back above $84,377.21, the session high. That would mean Thursday's reversal was a liquidity flush rather than a repricing, and the AI-beta read gets a lot weaker. Short of that, the bias stays lower, and bitcoin is still 4.6% below its 90-day high despite being up 1.3% over the past five sessions — the rally was shallower than the headlines suggested.
The Line
$82,000. Bitcoin closes below it within five sessions and the AI-beta trade owns this market outright.
