Meta Platforms goes into its Q2 report as the softest name on our board. Shares closed $595.19, down 1.80%, at just 5% of the session range.
Alphabet set the bar on July 22 — revenue up 24% to $119.76 billion, Google Cloud up 82%. Alphabet got rewarded. Meta is getting sold into the same earnings window.
That is the pre-print read. Cash-flow visibility is being paid for. Heavy AI capex is being discounted ahead of the numbers.
Verdict
The desk treats positioning into this week's mega-cap prints as defensive, and META is where it shows. $609.98 is the level — reclaimed within five sessions, the defensive read is wrong.

The Names
- META $595.19 — down 1.80% on 11.5M shares, the lightest volume of the ten. Closed near the session low of $594.45 and 25.3% below its 52-week high of $796.25. Sellers controlled the close, but the tape was thin — that cuts both ways into a print. Below $590.00, a widely watched round number, the pre-earnings bleed extends.
- AMZN $232.11 — down 0.66% on 35M shares into Thursday's report. Opened above the prior close and finished in the lower third of the range. The question in front of it is whether AI infrastructure spend holds near-term cash generation. Above $234.95, the session high, buyers have the bid back.
- GOOGL $319.74 — up 0.65%, but faded from a $324.18 high to a middle-of-range close. Post-print strength is being bought, not chased. It still sits 21.7% below its 52-week high of $408.61.
- AMD $521.95 — down 3.29% after gapping up 1.34% and printing $549.00. Closed at 13% of the range. Jim Cramer characterized the semiconductor drops as leverage-driven liquidations rather than a break in the chip cycle. Our $518.00 downside call stays live.
- AAPL $333.02 — up 3.53%, the biggest mover, closed 0.6% below the $334.99 52-week high. The one name where buyers held the close on real volume at 47.4M shares.
- JPM $353.21 — closed at the top of its 52-week range on 7.5M shares. Our $355 call remains pending. Financials are not participating in the tech de-rate.
Five names green, five red. The two heaviest volume names on the board — NVDA at 114.7M and TSLA at 62.6M — both closed lower.
The Risk Sheet
- Meta beats and guides up → above $609.98 → the defensive-positioning read is invalidated and the capex discount unwinds fast.
- August seasonality bites → Bank of America has warned U.S. stocks could struggle in August. Below META $590.00 and AMZN $230.95, the pre-print softness becomes a broader de-risk.
- Semis stay offered → below AMD $518.00 → the leverage-unwind framing gets tested, and NVDA's $204.81 low is the next reference.
- Rotation breaks down → below JPM $347.50 → the financials-over-platforms split stops working and this is a market-wide problem.
What flips the desk: Meta clearing $609.98 on volume heavier than Monday's 11.5M. That would say capex fears were priced and the sellers were early.
Tomorrow's Checklist
- META $609.98 reclaim
- AMZN $234.95 breakout
- AMD $518.00 hold
