US equity futures are lower and the dollar is higher against all the major currencies as central-bank week begins, and the composition of Friday's rally makes that opening more consequential than a routine soft start. All ten of the megacap names closed green on Friday, but $35.28 of the $56.90 in combined per-share gains — 62% — was booked at the opening bell rather than earned in the cash session. When the mechanism that delivered most of a rally is an overnight gap, a lower futures print removes the mechanism.

The Print

The headline breadth figure was unanimous: ten green closes out of ten, and ten gap-up opens out of ten. Alphabet (GOOGL) led at $342.74, up $10.14 or 3.05%, followed by Apple (AAPL) at $335.82, up $9.25 or 2.83%. The unweighted average gain across the group was 1.51%, which is a strong session by any standard and the sort of reading that normally reads as a clean risk-on sweep.

The internals were less uniform than the direction. Only four of the ten names finished in the upper third of their session ranges, and JPMorgan (JPM) closed in the lower third at $356.51 after trading as high as $360.00. In contrast, Alphabet and Apple both closed within pennies of their session highs, at $342.97 and $336.21 respectively. The implication is that the group moved together at the open and then separated.

The Quality Check

Separate the gap from the session and the distribution gets specific. Apple gapped up just $0.92 and then added $8.33 during regular hours — the gain was manufactured in the cash session. Alphabet gapped $2.50 and added $7.64. Those two names did the work after the bell rang.

Three names did the opposite and closed beneath their own opening prints. NVIDIA (NVDA) gapped up $2.88 to open at $221.24, then closed at $220.38, surrendering $0.86 of that gap and finishing mid-range on the heaviest volume in the group. JPMorgan gapped $4.70 and gave back $1.75. Microsoft (MSFT) gapped $3.22 and gave back $0.66 to close at $495.00. The dollar's strength reported into Monday's open bears directly on that subset: rate-sensitive balance sheets and long-duration compute names are where a higher discount rate lands first.

Three of the ten closed below their opening prints — NVIDIA, JPMorgan and Microsoft — while the two largest percentage gainers closed within $0.39 of their session highs.

My prior call that Apple would take out its 52-week high of $344.57 remains open; the close leaves $8.75 per share to go, or 2.6% of upside to that level, and Friday's cash-session strength was the right kind of strength for it. That call is still pending rather than proven.

Peer Context

The semiconductor pair is where my own work has been weakest, and it deserves a direct accounting. I called for AMD to close below $452.35 and then below $458.00; both windows expired unfilled, and the stock instead closed Friday at $513.75, up 12.6% over five sessions and 2.1% below its 90-day high of $525.00. What I underweighted was the durability of AI capex enthusiasm — reporting over the past week put Hewlett Packard Enterprise up 19.4% on AI infrastructure optimism following Oracle's commentary, and that bid has flowed to the second-source accelerator name rather than just the incumbent.

The divergence inside the pair is now wide. AMD is up 12.6% over five sessions; NVIDIA is down 3.6% over the same stretch and sits 4.3% below its 90-day high of $230.35. AMD also faded from $521.00 to close in the middle of its range, which is not the signature of a clean breakout. Elsewhere in the group, Alphabet remains 16.1% below its 52-week high of $408.61 while Apple is 2.5% below its own — the same nominal neighborhood, entirely different positions in their price histories.

Verdict

Fair. Friday's unanimous green close is real but thinner than it looks, because most of it was delivered before US trading began and three names could not hold what they were handed. The test is narrow and immediate: a NVDA close below its session low of $219.04 within three sessions confirms that the gap was the rally rather than the start of one, and that is where this argument lives or dies. A GOOGL close below $335.05 within five sessions would fill Friday's gap entirely and extend the read to the platforms. What would change my mind is AMD clearing its 90-day high of $525.00 within ten sessions on a close — that would tell me the AI capex bid is absorbing a stronger dollar, and the gap-dependence framing becomes stale.
