Apple printed $328.72 — a fresh 52-week high. That resets the whole board. Wednesday's rotation out of megacap tech lasted exactly one session. Thursday, the money sprinted back — and the bid is real.
The Big Picture
Breadth flipped hard. Seven of ten names in our watch group closed green. AAPL, GOOGL, META, and AMZN all gained more than 3%. Only TSLA, V, and AMD finished red.
The open told you early. Eight of ten names gapped higher off the bell. When the gaps hold and extend into the close, that's demand — no other way to read it.
Sentiment context cuts both ways. Parnassus, in its Q2 commentary on Seeking Alpha, said it remains constructively bullish on U.S. equities with a valuation-sensitive lens. Meanwhile Warren Buffett warned that speculative trading is making value hard to find, per Economic Times. Both can be true. Thursday's tape sided with the bulls.
Sector Pulse
Megacap tech led everything. AAPL +4.01%. GOOGL +3.17%. META +3.07%. AMZN +3.02%. MSFT +2.78%. That's the entire complex moving together — yesterday's software bleed fully reversed and then some.
Semis split down the middle. NVDA eked out +0.33% to $212.50 on 119M shares — the heaviest volume on the board. It dipped to $206.04 and got bought back. AMD was the opposite story: down 3.46% to $529.14 after a brutal reversal off $558.81.
Financials were mixed. JPM tacked on 1.17% to $346.91 and tagged a new 52-week high at $351.24 before fading. Visa slipped 0.25% to $355.14 — the second straight red print for the network. Banks keep working while payments stall.
The GOOGL detail matters most: it was the only green name that gapped down — then rallied 3.57% off its $358.15 open. Sellers had their shot at the bell and got run over.
The Names That Matter
Apple (AAPL) — Breakout Print
AAPL gapped up to $317.63 from a $314.86 prior close and never looked back. High of $328.72 — the top of its 52-week range. Close at $327.50, in the upper third of the day's range on 60.8M shares.
The close sits just 0.37% below the high-water mark. Above $328.72, there's no supply overhead. Below, $317.32 is the session floor bulls need to defend. This is a level, not a prediction.
AMD — Exhaustion Candle
AMD gapped up to $556.02 — 1.44% above the $548.13 prior close — then collapsed. It bled $49.24 top to bottom, tagging $509.57 before a bounce. Open-to-close, that's a 4.83% drop. Ugly.
A gap up that closes deep red is a warning shot. The bounce off $509.57 recovered the close to the middle of the range — small comfort. Below $509.57, the momentum case breaks. The 52-week high at $584.73 is now 9.5% above the close and getting further away.
Microsoft (MSFT) — Full Recovery
MSFT erased Wednesday's damage in one shot. Gapped to $387.80, ran to $398.96, closed $395.63 — up 2.78% on 32.7M shares. The close landed in the upper third of the range.
The $400 round number sits 4.37 points overhead — a psychological ceiling, nothing more. A close through it would confirm the recovery has legs. Still 28.8% below the $555.45 yearly high, so there's room if the flow persists.
Risks on the Horizon
- Crude and the Strait. Reports earlier in the week said the Hormuz blockade on Iranian shipping was reinstated, sending Brent up 5% to $79.37. If energy costs keep climbing, the megacap multiple debate gets harder. Watch whether equity strength survives another oil leg.
- NVDA's stall. The board's heaviest volume — 119M shares — produced a 0.33% gain. The $236.54 yearly high sits 11.3% above the close. Big effort, small result. If $206.04 gives way, the semi leadership question gets loud.
- AMD continuation. Thursday's reversal candle needs follow-through to matter. A break of $509.57 opens air below. A reclaim of $548.13 — the prior close — would neutralize it.
- Froth risk. Buffett's speculation warning lands while AAPL and JPM print yearly highs in the same session. When everything gaps up together, positioning gets crowded fast. One bad catalyst unwinds crowded books quickly.
The Macro Verdict
This was continuation dressed as rotation reversal. Wednesday's move into consumer and banks didn't die — JPM still made a new high. But megacap tech reclaimed leadership in a single session. That's breadth expanding rather than money merely shuffling chairs.
The levels the desk is watching: $328.72 on AAPL, $400 on MSFT, $509.57 on AMD. Whoever controls those controls next week.
Tomorrow's open is the tell. If AAPL holds above $317.63 — Thursday's gap — the breakout stands and we press. If the gap fills, respect the range and reassess.
